The Boat That Rocked (2009)

Director: Richard Curtis
Starring: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Tom Sturridge,Nick Frost, Rhys Ifans, Kenneth Branagh, Jack Davenport, Chris O'Dowd, Katherine Parkinson.
Certificate: 15
Genre: Comedy, music
Awards: None

The Boat That Rocked centres on a pirate radio station in the middle of the sea that gives the people of the UK Rock and Roll twenty-four hours a day. The result ends up to seem almost like a sitcom as they are only in one place the whole way through. The main radio DJs get into scraps with each other while the government (manly an angry Kenneth Branagh) try to outlaw radio piracy.

The film is immensely funny and features some of the best music ever, such as The Kinks and The Who. It contains a lot of my favourite British actors including two stars from the comedy TV show The IT Crowed. If your not into 60s music, you probably won't enjoy it. But that's just a small group of the world really.

Ice Age: A retrospect

For almost two years, I have written this blog. During that time I have managed to get over one thousand views. Now for my two hundredth post, I'm going to do the complete Ice Age trilogy.

Ice Age (2002)
Directors: Chris Wedge, Carlos Saldanha
Starring: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Goran Visnjic, Jack Black
Certificate: U
Genre: Animation, comedy, Adventure
Awards: None

Ice Age follows three animals as they try to bring a small human child back to his family. Manny (Romano) is a cynical, sarcastic and unsocial mammoth who is only helping the child so that the other two will leave him alone; Sid (Leguizamo) the sloth is the doofus of the group who sticks with the other two as he knows he can't survive on his own and Diego (Leary) is the double agent sabre-tooth tiger who really wants the baby so he can bring it to his pack.

This is my favourite animated film ever. The characters all have different traits that make them recognisable. The comedy is really well scripted. It's clever and doesn't just use Scrat and Sid as the only comic relief (unlike most of the two sequels). The music goes brilliantly with it especially "Send me on my way" by Rusted Root for the mid-film montage. It plays with your emotions so well and can have you laughing one minute and in tears the next. The villain is the only proper villain in the whole franchise, as he can talk, order people about and is altogether sinister. A lot of people won't agree with this, but I think this is even better than Toy Story.

*****Brilliant

Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006)
Director: Carlos Saldanha
Starring: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck
Certificate: U
Genre: Animation, comedy, Adventure
Awards: None

Oh god... If you're going to do a sequel to a good film, this is not the way to go. Ice Age 2 returns to the three main characters, and adds three brand new ones. There's  Ellie (Latifah) the female mammoth who thinks she's a possum and two possum brothers named Crash (Scott) and Eddie (Peck) who are so annoying you'll want to and eat them even if you're a vegetarian. I understand that they are supposed to be irritated, but when nothing they ever do is funny and the only thing your hoping is that they will both die all the way through the film. The plot is quite simple; The ice is melting, run!

You can tell that the original writers didn't take part in the sequel as the comedy is definitely worse than the original. Actually, everything is worse than the original. Manny loses all of his wit while he tries to impress Ellie, Diego the fearless tiger becomes useless when he is afraid of the water and the villains of the film are prehistoric shark like beings that can't talk. The best silent villains are sidekicks like Kevin in Sin City or Kroenen in Hellboy. Having a silent main villain makes the film feel like it's missing something. Sohto in the original was perfect as the bad guy and I know it would be stupid to bring him back, but if this film had as good a villain as him, it would be a hell of a lot better.

**Pretty bad

Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs (2009)
Director: Carlos Saldanha, Mike Thumeier
Starring: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Simon Pegg
Certificate: U
Genre: Animation, comedy, adventure

This film was much better than it's predecessor, but still not even close to the original. The introduction of the crazy warrior weasel Buck (Pegg) who becomes the comic relief of the film. This time, Sid steals some dinosaur eggs to raise as his own, but the mother soon comes looking for them and takes them plus Sid back to the underground world full of dinosaurs. Now the rest of the gang (including a heavily pregnant Ellie)  must rescue him.

This film has quite a few funny moments, but it's a different type of humour to the first film. While the first film had more witty and mature jokes, this seems to be aiming at a lower age range. All of the original characters have lost their charm by now (except Sid who is still a loveable doofus) and the villain isn't very interesting either, but even with all this, it's miles better than number two. Now let's hope that the fourth one won't mess it all up again.

Coriolanus (2011)

Director: Ralph Fiennes
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave
Certificate: 15
Genre: Thriller drama war
Awards: None

Coriolanus (Fiennes) is a general in a place that calls itself Rome. He has protected the people of Rome from attacks from his sworn enemy Aufidius (Butler). But after some manipulation of politicians, the people decide that Coriolanus deserves death. So Coriolanus decides to join Aufidius in invading Rome to have sweet revenge (seems reasonable).

This isn't a film that you can just switch off while watching, as the shakespearian language makes it so you have to concentrate the whole time. The film doesn't show the public in a very good light, with showing how easily people can be manipulated. I found the story to be a bit weak, but the acting is terrific. Fiennes directional debut is best described as the marmite of the food industry. You either love it or hate it.

The Departed (2006)

Director: Martin Scorsese
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga
Certificate: 18
Genre: Crime
Awards: Best director, Best editing, best adapted screenplay, best picture

The Departed focuses on the state police in boston who are trying to catch the crime lord Frank Costello (Nicholson). To do this, the police has planted their undercover agent Billy (DiCaprio) into Frank's gang. Unfortunately, the police aren't the only ones with double agents. Collin Sullivan (Damon) gives information from the police straight to Frank, but now the two undercover's have to find out who is the rat before they are found out instead.

The Departed is a massive cat and mouse chase where the two men take turns to be the hunter and the hunted. The acting is fantastic, and the story will keep you gripped to your seat. One aspect of the film is not explained, but other than that it is a perfect film. The ending left me with my mouth open all the way through the credits. This is definitely in my top ten!

The Usual Suspects (1995)

Director: Bryan Singer
Starring: Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Benico Del Toro, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollack, Pete Postlethwaithe , Chaz Palminteri
Certificate: 18
Genre: Crime
Awards: Best supporting Actor Spacey, Best Screenplay Christopher McQuarrie

The Usual Suspects begins in what seems to be a random police lineup of five criminals being questioned about a truck heist. It then goes forward in time to when the cripple Roger Verbal (Spacey) is telling US customs agent, Dave Kujan (Palmininteri). The five suspects team up after release on a job. With Verbal is; ex-cop Dean Keaton (Byrne), Partners Michael Mcmanus (Baldwin) and Fred Fenster (Del Toro),  and short tempered Tod Hockney (Pollack). Together they meet the lawyer Kobayashi (Postlethwaithe) who tells them they owe a debt to the mysterious Kaisar Shoze...

This film is absolutely amazing. All the characters are believable, and the end... The finale of the film is one of the greatest scenes of movie history. It's so clever, and just brilliant.

The Truman Show (1998)

Director: Peter Weir
Starring: Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich
Certificate: PG
Genre: Comedy, Sci Fi, Drama
Awards: None

Truman (Carrey) lives a normal life with a wife, a job, an his best friend. But he doesn't know that his whole world is a television studio and everyone he knows is an actor. After thirty years on Tv, his suspicions are aroused by the maker's mishaps.

The Truman Show has a really original screenplay and it's fun to see Jim Carrey in a serious role (well, half serious). Ed Harris is a brilliant creepy creator while all the other actors do their bits right too. The Truman Show is funny and heart warming. The ending also gives us a smile to our faces.

The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008)

Director: Scott Derrikson
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connolly, Kathy Bates, Jaden Smith
Certificate: 12
Genre: Sci Fi
Awards: none

The Day The Earth Stood Still is a remake of the 1951 film of the same name. Klaatu (Reeves) is an alien that comes to earth in order to wipe out the human race. When he is shot by soldiers, scientist Helen Benson (Connolly) looks after him and helps him escape his imprisonment. Now she needs to persuade Klaatu that Humans can be good before it is destroyed, while eluding the US government.

There's nothing really that special about this film. There's not much to pick out except that Keanu Reeves makes a good alien and Jaden Smith is even more annoying than Dakota Fanning in War Of The Worlds - and that's saying something. The action is good but overall it's just bland with nothing interesting to say about it, like wholegrain pasta.

Eragon (2006)

Director: Stefan Fangmeier
Starring: Ed Speleers, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Guillory, Robert Carlyle, John Malkovich, Garrett Hedlund
Certificate: 12
Genre: Fantasy
Awards: None

If you pay attention to the plot of Eragon, you will find that it is very similar to Star Wars. A world is being ruled under an evil emperor (Malkovich), a boy (Speleers) comes across something the empire wants (In this case a dragon egg), The boy's family is killed by the empire as they try and find the thing they want, Boy then meets old man (Irons) who wants to stop the empire and believes the boy is the key, boy and old man decide to rescue a woman (Guillory) from the emperor's right hand man (Carlyle) with the help of the antihero, (Spoiler alert!) old Man dies and boy joins the resistance.

I really like the books that the film is based on, but it seems that the director did not make as good a job at explaining the story as the author.  The dialogue is cheesy at times and the dragon doesn't seem to have much of a personality. Apart from Jeremy Irons and Robert Carlyle - who are as brilliant as ever - the actors are mediocre at best. It's definitely no Lord Of The Rings.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows (2011)

Director: Guy Richie
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Jared Harris, Noomi Rapace
Certificate: 12
Genre: Mystery, action, Crime
Awards: None

Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr.) returns to the big screen in this sequel to the 2009 film.  This time Holmes and Watson (Law) have to battle the fiendish professor Moriarty (Harris) - Sherlock's even in every way. The film is a lot bigger than the original with all the different scenes and fights.

The chemistry between the two main characters is as good as it was in the first film, and all of the new characters are interesting enough. Guy Richie's uses his trademark style of slow-motion and then speedy up a lot in the film which gives it fast paced feel and the story is quite clever. The best thing about the film however is the battle of wits between Sherlock and his nemesis. If you've read the books then you know the end, but it's still fun to see how they get to that point.
